Laurentian SETAC Chapter Update

Annual General MeetingThe Laurentian Chapter’s 14th Annual General Meeting and Conference took place on June 19th, in the beautiful Desmarais building at the University of Ottawa (Ottawa, Ontario). More than sixty participants joined the festivities, and contributed to making this event a success.

This year’s AGM theme was “ Integrating Past, Present and Future Isues in Environmental Toxicology”. Our three plenary speakers were:
Rob Letcher (Environment Canada) – Is there a case of thyroid hormone-related effect in wildlife exposed to persistent organohalogen contaminants or metabolites?
Roland Hosein (GE Canada) – Nanomaterials Toxicity: how much do we know?
Miriam Diamond (University of Toronto) – The science, art and politics of “chemicals management”

Following a well-deserved lunch, attendees were invited to tour the University of Ottawa’s Aquatic Care Facility and Laboratory for the Analysis of Natural and Commercial Envionmental Toxins (http://www.science.uottawa.ca/lancet/home.htm).

During the afternoon, attendees selected platform presentations amongst two concurrent sessions.

Our heads filled with new ideas, we reconvened at the Café Nostalgica for a few cold beverages and a BBQ, as well as the presentation of our Student Awards. Congratulations to our winners, and a big thank you to our sponsors:

Short Courses
A short course entitled “Radioactivity in the Environment: An Ecotoxicological Approach” was held on June 18th in conjunction with the AGM. The course was led by Dave Rodgers (Consultant) with presentations by Bliss Tracy (Health Canada) and Steve Mihok (Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission). With more than sixty participants, this short course was the most popular to date!
Another short course is just around the corner. The “Ecotoxicological Risk Assessment” short course, led by Keith Solomon (University of Guelph), will be held on September 18th at the Ontario Ministry of the Environment in Etobicoke. We already have more than fifty participants enrolled, and are looking forward to the event, which will be catered by Vert Catering, an eco-friendly catering company.

Pub Nights
We are hard at work planning our fall pub night events, a few of which have been confirmed:

September 23 – Guelph – The Sudbury Soils Study: a significant case study in human health and ecological risk assessment - Chris Wren, Mirarco, Laurentian University

October 28 – Toronto – Reporting on Chemical Use at the Municipal Level - ChemTRAC and Toronto's New Bylaw - Marianne Kingsley, Toronto Public Health

More events will be planned in Ottawa and southern Ontario. All information is available on our website: http://www.laurentiansetac.ca.
